Soar Like an Eagle

Do you ever look up and wish you could fly? I read an adorable story recently about a baby eagle who somehow got separated from his mother and landed upon a chicken farm. He was cared for there and learned to act like chickens act – that’s all he knew, because that’s all he was ever taught. Then one day he saw a big eagle flying overhead and something inside him stirred. He had always felt that there was something different about him… Now he knew: he wanted to fly!

“Could I?” he wondered. “How do I do it? What if I fall? Why am I stuck here in this barnyard, instead of being up in those treetops?”

How? What if? Why? These questions are double edged swords: used at the right time in the right way, they can achieve lift off and set you soaring; used improperly, they become roadblocks or cement weights that hold you down and stop you in your tracks. [Read more...]

Lessons from the Beach

Lessons from the BeachBeaches are often known for their beautiful vistas, but often it’s the little things that catch my eye. One day in Hawaii, it was the little world of a rock, the edge of the ocean, and the sand. I was struck by how they interacted so intimately and so constantly with each other, yet each one had its own distinct identity.

The sand provided such a beautiful base and support for the rocks and the water. The water moved gracefully, washing away cares and cleansing all in its path. The sand didn’t try to be water and the water didn’t try to be sand.

I realized that there were some important lessons to be learned from this tiny little community! [Read more...]

Let Go of the Past

Old Bench To the passing person, this was just an old bench on a porch of an old building. But wait, it was so much more than that! Call me strange, but when I looked at it, I immediately saw the complementary colors of the blues and orange-red tones. Each made the other pop. The other thing I saw were shapes. The whole thing was a bunch of interacting reactangles: the bench, the floor, the window (and its panes), the wall (and its bricks). What a solid structure! No wonder it lasted so long.

Are your beliefs like that? Lasting a long time, solid and unchanging, but leaving you like the bench: somewhat empty? [Read more...]

Are your thoughts all tangled up?

SeaweedI’m often intrigued by seaweed, shells and other things that wash up onto the beach. Seaweed for me becomes a fascinating bunch of lines and shapes, intermingling with each other. In this case, it reminded me of my thoughts at the time: confused and tangled. (We’re all in that place, sometimes, aren’t we?)

In creating this image, it was a conscious decision to have the seaweed start off the frame and flowing from the top right. Since we read from left to right, that is opposite to the way we normally would expect see the main visual component of the image placed. This creates drama and tension. [Read more...]

Manifesting is a Partnership

Barn WallI was out in country one day last autumn and walked by what at first glance was an old weathered barn. It didn’t particularly capture my interest at first. Barns don’t fascinate me. But I stayed and walked around it, determined not to let my initial negative impressions rule me.

So I started looking. Really looking. At all of what was there – even the little things. Then I started seeing. The barn wall was beautiful. Its lines and cracks were a roadmap of its life. And look here: a wonderful little blade of grass, weathered and dry, peaking out from the dark, old weathered wood of the barn wall, soaking up the sunshine! [Read more...]

Rise Above the Clouds of Doubt

I had parked the car and walked along the windy path. Nice up here, I thought, but not as spectacular as I had expected. Everyone says the top of Haleakala in Maui is really special. Then I rounded the corner. What I saw was this image.

WoW! There really is a God, and this is his/her home. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t talk. I had to catch my breath! This was so absolutely divinely breathtaking. I had to just stand and look before I could even begin to compose a photo. How do you capture such incredible beauty? And even more importantly, this feeling I was experiencing? [Read more...]

A different point of view: 3 creative techniques

Tulips“Why don’t we all get low down and dirty?” suggested a friend. No, he didn’t mean what you think! He meant let’s stop photographing everything from an adult height and change perspective for a while. What does the world look like from a child’s point of view? Or a dog’s or a pidgeon’s? We so take for granted that our point of view is the only one. Not only with visual information, but too often with ideas and beliefs.

Changing perspective with a camera seems easy – you just move, and voila – the scene looks different.  True, but it’s actually not easy. Just as in ife, we often get stuck on a certain way of looking at things and become fixated on a certain way of approaching things. [Read more...]
